Flowers: Flowers 1–3 (–7) in axillary cymes. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Hypanthium prolonged above ovary. Calyx of 4–5 sepals; sepals distinct or connate and usually splitting irregularly at anthesis, persistent. Corolla of 4–5 petals, often showy. Stamens numerous, distinct; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior, (2)3–4(–7)-celled; ovules numerous.

Fruit: Berries globose or pear–shaped. Seeds numerous; seed coat bony; embryo horseshoe–shaped or curved.
